As announced last week, one of the most eagerly anticipated and frequently requested updates will be launching in RuneScape this summer. The Evolution of Combat project will see the biggest change to any system in RuneScape’s history and, as if that wasn’t exciting enough, RuneScape members will also be able to apply to take part in our first ever limited access closed beta.

All those wishing to apply for the beta and gain exclusive access to the update before everyone else will be able to sign up for the chance to take part from the 1st June. Beta players will not only be the first to get to grips with the new combat mechanics but will also have the unique opportunity to help test and shape the dynamics of the update ahead of its full release later this year.

By taking part in the beta and showing us your best use of swordplay, eagle-eyed archer’s tricks and esoteric wizard’s gambits, you’ll be working with us to create a battle system that’s fluid, interactive, and well and truly built for you. Over the coming weeks we will be revealing some of the incredible new features to whet your appetite, but remember to sign up on the 1st June to ensure you don’t miss out on the chance to take part.

Full details of how to register for the beta along with some tantalising teasers will be announced on http://www.runescape.com. The first batch of beta testers will be able to enter the game on the 26th June with all members gaining access shortly after. All members interested in taking part will be granted beta access before the full release, but we encourage you to register as early as possible to be in with a chance of being among the first to experience the update.

The closed beta will only be open to RuneScape members, so if you want to be in with a chance of experiencing the new combat system, be sure to sign up for RuneScape membership before the 1st June.

Still itching for more information? Then be sure to tune in to upcoming Behind the Scenes videos for more details about the combat rework announcement and our first ever beta trial.

The RuneScape Content Team

It looks like we are finally getting the ability to sheathe weapons, take different stances and really make combat feel more like combat. Honestly I can't wait to see what this update will bring and really hope I get a chance to beta test it. Based on the pictures alone I feel like this is definitely a step in the right direction for runescape as I can remember talking with people about how features like this would be cool years ago.

In recognition of the commitment shown by our long-term members, anyone who registers for the beta who has been a member for 12 or more consecutive months will have full, unlimited access to the beta for the entirety of its duration.

Finally some kind of reward that will hopefully makeup for things they have done previously that didn't feel too right to people who have been members for many years.
I think that this is well deserved considering it's $60/year for runescape membership.
I'm glad I am guaranteed to get in for the entire beta since I've been a member since 2005.

That's pretty cool!

Confused- are you automatically signed up if you're a member, or do you have to sign up separately?

From what I read, it looks like they will be sending invitations out in the form of an item (in game). Click on it and it will take you to the sign up page. The invitations will be sent out soon after that.

Yeah, basically just click the item, do whatever the screen that come sup tell you and you are signed up (and in the beta if you have had membership for long enough).
I think the first beta wave starts the 17th or something.

There is a ton of detailed info on that link (mostly answers to questions people have had). So much that I am not going to repost it.

I've been playing the Beta, and I personally prefer the old way =P that may just be me, but I do not really care for it. I have 99 ranged, and all of my other stats are around 20 levels lower, yet I dominate with melee, and I can hardly get a kill, even against mages 20+ combat levels lower than me with ranged. I hope that there are some serious changes, or I may either become just a skiller, or just quit all together.

So far I've enjoyed it, but I've only done some basic PVE/PVM with melee.
I had a blast though and combat is a whole lot more fun.
I like the stances, sheathing and unsheathing, the way armor alters your health (and thus has a more obvious effect).
The only minor complaint I have right now is that some of the new controls are not very obvious.
And the interface feels a little cluttered but it may just be because I am not used to it.
Fighting random monsters feels incredibly easy now, regardless of combat level.
I'[ll have to play with some of the other combat styles, including the melee ones I haven't done and see what I think as far as combat style balance.

Also remember, this is a BETA, which means everything is subject to change, be tweaked, or be removed entirely.
